Forest Hill Area Guide
As the name suggests, Forest Hill has a lot of steep roads, driving over Canobie Road can make you feel like you are on a rollercoaster at times, but do make sure you pay attention to the lovely properties available here and the views.
The main attraction is the Horniman Museum, Fredrick Horniman, a Victorian tea merchant and philanthropist once lived on the grounds where the museum sits and wanted to share all of his exotic collections to the public so used to open his house for the public’s enjoyment. After being extended to a much bigger space, Horniman Museum is home to a 16-acre garden has an aquarium and a dinosaur exhibition.
There is a large collection of artefacts from around the world plus musical instruments, a conservatory, a sundial walk and a nature trail, not forgetting the popular Saturday farmers’ market.
You will be spoilt for choice when choosing somewhere to eat and drink in Forest Hill. If you are having a light bite or lunch, you should definitely visit The Teapot which is a wonderful café serving delicious cakes, paninis and pastas. For a more formal meal, there are options like The Thai Orchard Restaurant and Bar or India Gate as well as most of the pubs in the area enjoying gastro status.
There are some great schools in the area Fairlawn Primary School, Forest Hill School Kilmorie Primary School and Horniman Primary Schoolare just a few of the decent schools in Forest Hill.
Trains from Forest Hill to London Bridge take only 17 minutes but the Overground is the big sell for the area with services to Shoreditch and beyond.
Some of Forest Hill’s Victorian houses and terraces are the work of Lewisham-born master builder Ted Christmas, renowned locally for his work here and in Sydenham. The area also has many larger houses from the Victorian period, most of which are divided into flats. There are a handful of Georgian houses, along with Thirties semis, Art Deco flats and live/work mews houses along with the usual collection of purpose built flats that are present throughout South East London.
